Great sushi. Absolutely wonderful and friendly sushi chef.Only one function room as in the picture. Rest is normal seating.
Get yourself a reservation because they’ll rush you out if you get in at all—we were on edge our whole meal, ate quickly, and left. This would have a much appreciated detail to include on a website, which they don’t actually have—maybe with a menu and prices and the “reservation recommended” tip. The sushi was good—the Bali hi roll especially—and props to the guy filling the water because he was excellent.Overall, the food was very authentic but the experience wasn’t great.
The appetizers were delicious, the sushi was well made, and the cocktails were fantastic. Best Japanese food on this side of the island.
The food...incredible! Service was quick and we were happy to see many locals streaming in to eat there too. Outside of the building looks a bit rough, but don't be fooled, this place has some of the best food I've eaten regardless of location. Very fresh, also has sushi bar and room for larger groups with reservations. Prices are moderate to high depending on what you like to eat. My wife has King Crab and I ate the filet mignon with lobster tail!
For us, Kentaro's is our family restaurant. We go there together to celebrate or bring friends in from out of town. The food is great, but the atmosphere and service we get press it over the top. Don't miss out on the green tea ice cream pie!
Another unwelcoming experience on the island although our waiter was very nice. This place was not clean. Stained carpet and upholstered chairs, smelled in certain areas with dirty walls. My husbands sushi was ok (his complaint was they had no cream cheese and the rolls were cut too thick). I ordered the sobi noodles w/ vegetables in vegetable broth. The presentation was pretty... the taste wasn’t. The noodles had an odd taste, and the broth... gnarly. I admit I’m picky, but my husband agreed. We paid and nearly ran out of there, it just grossed us out.
We had a party of 5 and all really enjoyed our meal. Our only issue is that they were not very knowledgeable about gluten free options. I ordered the Yose Nabe and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it.
The portion is good, but taste is just ok.
Can't say it's bad overall but it's just not as good as the reputation suggests. Service is excellent, as is decor. Some of their speciality dishes are quite tasty but most of the fish isn't fresh, which is sad for such a highly regarded sushi place.
Absolutely love their won tons and all their sushi. Its always busy & doesnt open until 5 pm..wish they served lunch.
Good drinks and good food for the most part. The ahi and salmon sashimi were fantastic. Some of the other sushi like the eel and ono were a little tough and fishy. The presentation is very nice and they are extremely busy there. 4 out of 5 because i have had much better eel and the restaurant presentation is "tired." Carpet needs to be replaced and overall atmosphere needs a face lift. If felt borderline dirty. Also, if you don't like sushi then you will not like this place.
The food is really good! Love the Sushi and sashimi. The ice cream cake is awesome
Even without reservations this aged place will have seating between the bar area, dining area, and more private rooms. Convivial atmosphere similar to a well-established steak house where the bartender pours drinks nonstop and the food comes in copious quantities. Considered as one the the better sushi restaurants in town, but lacking in finesse and finer quality that you'd find in a small "attention to detail" sushi eatery where presentation can make small differences.
Go early- it gets crazy after 6. Very fun place to eat. Great Hawaiian Japanese food.
Amazing service 🙏 great food , very relaxed and open environment will be stopping here again 🔥🔥
Great sushi! We had the Rock and Roll and the Hanalei Roll. Both were excellent! Wonderful service as well. Tasty drinks!
Delicious spot. Love coming here. Decent prices considering other restaurants on island. Make reservations!
Food: the sushi was good, not great. Surprisingly there weren’t more sushi places in this part of the island. Service: they allow all of their tables to be filled up by reservations, and when we got there right at 5 when they opened, they told us we could eat there but only if we’re done quickly because of all the reservations that were coming in soon. Also, our food took nearly an hour to come...mine came out 20 minutes before my wife’s, meaning we weren’t able to eat together. The server said they only had one guy making the sushi, and it is a huge restaurant...
Sushi Paradise! Best on this island, any island, even mainland!
The best sushi in town. Whatever you order you will like it!
We had a wonderful experience here! We got seated right when we walked in and had a great server. The food was delicious and fresh; I had the butterfish and sushi and we really enjoyed it!!
Love their Tin Foil Special and their Bali Hai Bomb
Great service and great food
Kintaro claims to be “dispensing inventive hand rolls” NOT. There’s nothing inventive about their menu. Prices aren’t bad and our chef Jason was really a great sushi chef. He knows how to make tightly rolled sushi, which is important. The fish was also very good I just wouldn’t call it inventive, I’ve had inventive.
Pretty good japanese restaurant. Wish we had a chance to go back for more food as we had a light meal when we went. Sushi was good and the place was packed so we got seats in the bar in the back. Would prefer sitting at the sushi bar but that has to be next time too. The place has been there for many years, growing from a small sushi counter to a large buzzing restaurant, still run by the same family and lots of locals was there, making a nice vibe and its always a good sign to know that the locals likes to come back to a place.
If you’re looking for great Sushi and even better service stop in and try Kintaro. The complimentary appetizer was off the chart!
tastey, fair price for quality, good service. atmosphere a little noisey for me, but it was busy - friday at 8 pm. I'll be back to try more....
Great place !!!! You can dress casual, lots of locals like to come here for an occasion and just to eat good food. I really enjoyed the crab, also the steaks were tender and flavorful. The fried fish and sushi were also delicious. If you make a reservation they have couple of teppanyaki stations in the back. Every time I come here I like to get the “purple haze” it’s the sake drink this place is notorious for. Always a good time and nice atmosphere here.
Great sushi & miso soup. Nice little bar with great selection.
Very good! Great to share a bunch of sushi with a group.
Sushi was great. The atmosphere feels very authentic Japanese. The bathroom was very clean. Would have given five stars if the waiting staff had a better concept of which items on the menu were gluten free.
It was insanely busy when we got here so we sat at the sushi bar. It was fun to watch the chef make all of the rolls. Service was pretty slow and the place was insanely loud, but the sushi was tasty and they did a good job considering how busy it was there.
Awesome sushi. Try the unagi! out of this world!
As always great food and drinks, I look forward to coming back here on my next visit to Kauai
Best sushi on Kauai. Unfortunately the kitchen and garage just burned up, so it will be months before they are back in business. We hope they recover quickly!
Yummy Hula Pie.
Well to start off we had several people recommend the sushi here and raved it was the best on the island. So we took our family with high expectations and was slightly embarrassed by the quality and limited options our brother and sister in law had never tried sushi before and wanted to experience it on a Hawaiian island. Well It’s alright just not some of the best sushi I’ve had, my daughters got the entirely wrong order (they were very busy so that might just have been a mistake) however I don’t think I will be going out of my way to go there again anytime soon.
Very popular sushi restaurant catering to locals and tourists. Food was fantastic! But be sure to make reservations. Good for large groups. It can get a little loud though. If the parking lots full use the one across the street -it’s their lot too.
Local favorite for Japanese Food. Can be crowded, especially during weekends and the Summer. Tourists do eat here too. From the street, you would not have any idea of how big and nice looking Kintaro is in the inside. There are three large dining areas, including a traditional Japanese party room.Dinner only: Besides sushi (extensive menu selection) and serving bentos, Kintaro also serves Teppanyaki. Hawaiian Japanese Food tends to be sweeter (use more sugar) than traditional Japanese Food. You can tell the difference in Kintaro’s Yosenabe and Sukiyaki’s broths.Portions are big. You won’t be hungry after finishing your meal. Kid-friendly (have high chairs), but no diaper changing table in the women’s restroom. There is a side ramp near the front entrance for those who needed it. Plus two parking lots, one next to the restaurant and the lot across the street.
